British mezzo-soprano Jen Statham is currently in her second year studying for a Master’s degree in Vocal Studies at the Royal Academy of Music with generous support from Help Musicians UK and Olgarhythm. She is under the tutelage of Raymond Connell and vocal coach Janet Haney and Matthew Fletcher.
Jen performs regularly as a soloist in the Royal Academy’s Bach in Leipzig series working with world renowned conductors including John Butt, Eamonn Dougan and Iain Ledingham. She has also worked with Rachel Podger performing as a soloist in the Wigmore Hall. Earlier this year Jen played the roles of Hansel,(Hansel and Gretel), and Romeo ( I Capuleti e I Montiecchi) in the Royal Academy’s opera scenes. She has also performed the roles of Donna Anna in Don Giovanni and the Governess in The Turn of the Screw with the Bristol Operatic Society.
During her undergraduate degree at Bristol University, Jen was a first study violinist and in her final year was awarded the Bristol University Performance Prize for the highest final recital mark. She now continues her violin as a second study at the Academy where she learns with Laura Rickard. Prior to starting at the Academy, Jen performed with choirs including Genesis Sixteen, National Youth Chamber Choir GB, Bristol University Singers, Bristol Madrigal Ensemble and was very involved in the Operatic and Musical Theatre societies as a musical director and chorus master.
