Eleanor Burke
Eleanor Burke is an award-winning English-Irish director and the Founder of Green Opera, the world’s first environmentally sustainable opera company. She was recently selected by Robert Carsen — recipient of the 2023/24 Grand Prix of the Académie des Beaux-Arts — as one of three artists to share in the prize’s prestigious fund. She is currently training as an Intimacy Coordinator with IDC, focusing on developing safe, collaborative practices within opera performance.
At just 23, Burke became the youngest director ever accepted onto the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House. While there, she directed the UK premiere of Larmes de couteau by Bohuslav Martinů and the annual Jette Parker Artists Summer Performance. Her two previous productions for HGO — Eugene Onegin and The Cunning Little Vixen — won an Off West End Award, and she is delighted to be returning to the company to direct The Rape of Lucretia. She was also a semi-finalist in the 2025 European Opera-Directing Prize. Recent work includes world premieres of Jane Eyre by John Joubert (Arcola Theatre/Green Opera), The Prisoner by William Gardner and Matthew Green (Winner of the Stephen Oliver Award), and 555: Verlaine en Prison by Burke and Logan Lopez González (Royal Opera House/La Monnaie).
Burke has served as Staff Director at Theater Krefeld und Mönchengladbach in Germany and works regularly as an Associate Director with leading houses including the Royal Opera House, Wiener Staatsoper, Theater an der Wien, Glyndebourne, the Opéra-Comique, and the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. Upcoming projects include Assistant Director for Oedipus (Studio 54, Broadway) and Director for Pagliacci (English Touring Opera), Turandot (Opera Holland Park), and future performances of 555: Verlaine en Prison with La Cité Bleue and La Monnaie.
