Assistant Director for 'The Rape of Lucretia'
We are seeking an Assistant Director to join the creative team for our upcoming production of Britten’s ‘The Rape of Lucretia’, directed by Eleanor Burke and Alex Gotch and conducted by Oliver Cope, performing at Jacksons Lane in April 2026.
This is a physically driven, design-led production rooted in movement, spatial transformation, and psychological realism. The Assistant Director will work closely with the Directors, principal cast, and cover cast, and will take responsibility for rehearsing and mounting the cover performance.
HGO has a strong track record of providing development opportunities for assistant directors who go on to lead their own productions. Recent examples include Eleanor Burke (Assistant Director: La Bohème, Sāvitri; Director: The Cunning Little Vixen, Eugene Onegin, The Rape of Lucretia), Finn Lacey (Assistant Director: The Cunning Little Vixen, Hänsel und Gretel; Associate Director: Eugene Onegin; Director: La Cenerentola), and Alex Gotch (Movement Director: Eugene Onegin; Director: The Rape of Lucretia).
Dates
- Rehearsals begin: 24 March 2026
- Performances: Six performances between Saturday 18 April and Sunday 26 April 2026
- Cover performance: Saturday 25 April 2026
Key Responsibilities
- Rehearse the cover cast
- Mount and run the cover performance on Saturday 25 April 2026
- Support rehearsals and note staging across the production process
- Operate surtitles and note the performers during performances
Essential Skills
- Ability to read music
- Experience or strong interest in opera, music theatre, or physically led work
- Confident working with sensitive material
- Strong organisational and communication skills
