When Emperor Nero falls obsessively in love with the ambitious Poppea, their toxic romance becomes Rome’s ultimate power play. She’s ruthless, he’s unhinged, and together they’re unstoppable. Around them: gossiping servants, doomed philosophers, vengeful wives, scheming exes, and a chorus of opportunists, all pulled into the chaos of Poppea’s ascent.

As Ancient Rome collides with modern decadence, and marble deities oversee a glittering empire of excess and golden opulence, two people’s all-consuming lust can bring down an empire.

With pace, punch, and panache – even the Gods can’t look away.

Sung in Italian with full English surtitles

Running time: c. 2 hrs 30 min incuding interval

REVIEWS

⭐⭐⭐⭐”A real treat  with a cast of splendid young singers and players… Once again, HGO has produced a show that can stand proudly alongside those of much larger companies – an object lesson in how to present baroque opera“

Owen Davies, Plays to See

⭐⭐⭐⭐”HGO’s  production  of L’Incoronazione di Poppea at Jacksons Lane had it all… Ottavia (the simply magnificent mezzo of Clover Kayne)… Seneca (the voice of the evening, bass Masimba Ushe). Delivered with the usual HGO gusto, panache and joyous sense of fun, this raunchy production will remain in the memory for quite some time“

David Winskill, Hampstead and Highgatre Gazette

⭐⭐⭐⭐” Theano Papadaki in the title role is a revelation… The supporting cast handles the opera’s complex web of betrayals with apparent ease…  These are real talents at the start of promising careers, delivering performances fit to grace any opera house.“

Elizabeth Botsford, The Spy in the Stalls

“As Poppea, Theano Papadaki  was vibrant and poised, she knew what she wanted and was going for it… Jack Harberd contributed a wonderfully sleazy Lucano… The flirting between Beech’s Valetto and Kristin Ammattil’s Damigella was a lovely moment of lightness… cast and players all held our attention vividly.“

Robert Hugill, Planet Hugill

The acting was top-notch from all … Three singers stood out from the cast, including Theano Papadaki as Poppea, her seductively beautiful voice masking her ruthless ambition. Hera Protopapas excelled as a boyish Nerone… Jasmine Flicker also impressed as Drusilla, both through the exquisite quality of her voice, and her ability to act the complex role.

Andrew Benson-Wilson

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “Assessors’ Choice is our new way of recognising great shows as and when we see them – think of it as a five-star review!”

Off West End Awards

“One particular throughline is the vocal strength of all performers. Monteverdi’s melodies are performed with meticulous care and affection… one has witnessed a quality production.”

Scott Matthewman, The Reviews Hub
