“Love knows no bounds of age or status; it pierces with equal force the heart of a young woman and a world-weary soul.”

Tatyana falls hopelessly in love with Eugene Onegin, the enigmatic friend of Lensky, an aspiring poet besotted with her sister Olga. When Onegin coldly rejects Tatyana’s affections and Lensky’s relationship with Olga faces a devastating test, childhood bonds shatter with tragic consequences and the courses of four young lives are altered forever.

In HGO’s dynamic new production of Tchaikovsky’s beloved opera, missed opportunities and haunting regrets collide. Featuring our cast of rising opera stars, the production traces the transformative power of first love and the lasting impacts of our choices.

Sung in Russian with full English surtitles

REVIEWS

“Not only one of the most impressive productions I have yet seen from this company: it is one of the most impressive of the work I have seen … excellences of staging, performance and ensemble.”
Mark Berry, Seen and Heard International
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐“This glorious production of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece will burnish HGO’s already glittering reputation for nurturing young talent.”
David Winskill, Hampstead and Highgate Gazette
⭐⭐⭐⭐ “This imaginative version directed by Eleanor Burke for the admirable HGO… the tormented duet between Tatyana and Onegin at the climax of the opera was all one could have wanted.”
Owen Davies, Plays to See
“A marvellous cast without a single weak link… Jolyon Loy, as handsome and handsome-voiced as anyone could wish for… to have a big-voiced Tatyana of Hasmik  Harutunyan’s quality was luxury indeed… Best of all was Matthew Curtis’s ringing Lensky, one of the most movingly sung I have heard… “
Hugh Canning, Operalogue
“A thrillingly direct Eugene Onegin from HGO… Hasmik Harutunyan (Tatyana), Matthew Curtis (Lensky) and Jolyon Loy (a very relatable and modern Onegin) all sang and acted with thrilling directness, in a venue that gave them nowhere to hide. It was the sort of night that made you want to go out and drag in an opera-sceptic, just to watch their prejudices being blasted away at storm force.“
Richard Bratby, The Spectator
” Eleanor Burke crafted an entertaining and ultimately moving show … With a good ear for this often almost balladic score, Oliver Cope conducted a very skilled chamber group …  Arina Mkrtchian’s sonorous Olga … Everyone performed solidly, with manifest commitment: a fine experience.”
David Shengold, Classical Voice North America
