Stephen Whitford

Stephen Whitford is now based in London but grew up in Gloucestershire. His engagements include full scale operas and oratorios, as well as intimate recitals. His repertoire ranges from
very new to very old music, with lots in between. In 2025 Stephen will sing Dandini in Rossini’s La Cenerentola (Hurn Court Opera) and join The Grange Festival for performances of La Traviata, Die Fledermaus and Bernstein on Broadway concerts. Other plans involve a tour of China and a European tour of a devised piece, co-written by Stephen. Last November he won the Roger Higgins Prize and the Wendy Blamire Award at the Hurn Court Singer of the Year competition. Stephen’s recent highlights include: a French song recital in Aldeburgh Festival 2024; Belcore in L’elisir d’amore (Aylesbury Opera); Marcello in La Bohème (Aylesbury Opera); the title role in Mendelssohn’s Elijah (Stroud Choral Society); covering Don Giovanni (Hurn Court Opera); Derrick in Rip van Winkle (Gothic Opera); Novice’s Friend in Billy Budd (New Palace Opera); and chorus for Longborough Festival Opera. Stephen is an alumnus of the Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme and has studied at King’s College, Cambridge, the Royal Academy of Music, London and the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna.
